POLITICAL EATING

As a regular citizen who is not involved in politics or the decision-making of big companies, it is easy to feel small and powerless regarding overwhelming problems like climate change and social injustice. But everyone of us has a power that is often underestimated: our consumer choices.

Our choices matter. We are constantly sending out signals to the market, whether we like it or not. We can not not communicate, as Watzlawik put it. But what we can do is to reward more sustainable businesses by choosing their products over less sustainable alternatives. Regarding food for example, we do not only demonstrate the producer and distributer what taste we like. We also validate their ways of production, wage distribution, transportation, packaging and how they treat living beings. At the same time, a less sustainable alternative is being punished (it hasn't been bought) and if this happens often enough, the responsible people will at some point be willing or forced to change their offer according to the demand. We therefore have a responsibility as consumers. It is important to get informed about our impact and I would like to encourage the users of my website to take this knowledge as a tool – in the best case to change our economic system to a better, more future orientated and sustainable version.
